An officer of the law has entered a plea of not guilty to a charge of misconduct in a public office. The accusation against the officer involves an alleged failure to promptly release from custody an individual who had been “unlawfully arrested”. PC James Martin, a member of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, attended Winchester Crown Court on Friday and formally denied the alleged offence. Judge Paul Dugdale postponed the proceedings, setting a trial date of 6 October 2025 for the 35-year-old defendant, who is from Shanklin. As the defendant, who is based on the Isle of Wight, was released, the judge informed him: “You will remain on unconditional bail.” Following Mr Martin’s charging, a spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary stated that he had been assigned to “directed duties”. The spokesperson added: “A Hampshire and Isle of Wight police officer has been charged with misconduct in a public office.” She further stated: “PC James Martin is charged following an incident in December 2022, which led to the wrongful arrest of a member of the public.” The spokesperson concluded by saying: “PC Martin is alleged to have failed to take immediate action to release the man from custody, once he discovered the arrest was unlawful.” Post navigation Irish Police Conclude Search Operation in Jo Jo Dullard Disappearance Case Northamptonshire Police Initiates Recruitment for New Chief Constable
