A police force is urging drivers planning to sell their cars to be cautious following a series of vehicle thefts. Hertfordshire Police reported that several vehicles had been stolen from Hertsmere, Dacorum, and East Hertfordshire after individuals attempted to sell their cars. The force explained that the scam involves offenders arriving to view a car and executing a “key swap,” then stealing the key to take the vehicle at a later time. Detective Sergeant Chris Dale stated: “We are urging residents to remain vigilant and if you are planning to sell your vehicle make sure you don’t leave your vehicle or key unattended with any prospective buyer.” He mentioned that Mercedes vehicles were primarily affected, though other brands were also targeted. Mr. Dale advised: “Don’t agree to meet a buyer alone, always take someone with you if you are meeting away from your home.” Hertfordshire Police also announced that a 78-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman from Ilford had been arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicles.
