Police are reviewing over 100 incidents of baby deaths and injuries that occurred at a hospital trust. An independent investigation into maternity services at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust, headed by senior midwife Donna Ockenden, has been underway since September 2022. Nottinghamshire Police, which declared a criminal investigation in September 2023, reported that it recently began receiving data from the Ockenden review team. Assistant Chief Constable Rob Griffin stated that all referrals would be “meticulously investigated”. This development occurs as Ms Ockenden’s inquiry approaches 2,000 cases, which are being managed by over 120 clinical reviewers. The force indicated that “more than 100 cases” from this total have been referred to the police. The force informed the BBC that it had requested the review team to furnish information on all the cases they possess. Mr Griffin stated: “I expect the number of referrals will further increase and all cases will be meticulously investigated by a team of skilled and professional investigators who are dedicated to this case.” He also mentioned that affected families remained “at the heart” of the force’s investigation. He further added: “We are receiving information from Donna Ockenden’s review team and our approach is being underpinned by compassion, care and candour toward those affected.” Ms Ockenden commented: “We have signed a memorandum of understanding [to enable us to share information] with Nottinghamshire Police.” She continued: “As part of this, the police have asked that we share all review cases with them, and we are currently at the beginning of this process. “We will continue to share the remaining review cases with Nottinghamshire Police, upon their request.”” Concurrently, the trust reported its focus on a “maternity improvement programme,” noting an increase in staff numbers, recruitment for leadership positions, and enhanced staff retention. The trust also acknowledged that there was “still more work to do”. Tracy Pilcher, chief nurse, stated: “We welcome Donna’s feedback and the opportunities it provides us to continue to improve our maternity services.” She added: “We are committed to both the independent review of maternity services and police investigation and will fully co-operate with their inquiries.” Post navigation Woman Arrested Following ‘Serious’ A65 Collision £20,000 Reward Offered in Fatal E-Bike Ramming Investigation
