Data from a police force indicated that its control room processed 20 “silent” 999 emergency calls within a five-hour timeframe. Specifically, Cambridgeshire Police made public a record of the 999 calls handled by its control room between 16:00 BST and 21:00 on Friday. The force, having uploaded this log to its official website, stated its intention was to “demonstrate the reality” of police work. Among the calls logged, one individual informed police that his “Amazon parcel has gone missing,” another reported an ex-partner “outside their house with petrol cans,” and a separate call described a man “dancing” on a motorway. The collected data revealed that the control room handled approximately 180 calls over the five-hour duration. Out of these, twenty calls were categorized as “silent,” with five of them presumed to be “pocket” calls. Multiple calls concerned reported incidents of violence, alongside numerous reports pertaining to “domestic” incidents and various motoring issues. The log included reports of fights, individuals walking, and a motorway dancer. Cambridgeshire Police stated that it had arranged this “postathon” initiative with the aim to “demonstrate the reality of the demand” placed upon its officers. A statement published on the website further noted: “It is hoped that this postathon will provide an insight into the volume, variety and complexity of calls and incidents that staff must be equipped to deal with.”
