Law enforcement officers fatally shot a deer after it was observed within the premises of a school. South Yorkshire Police confirmed they responded to calls on Monday morning regarding a “stag was posing a danger to pupils, staff, and other members of the public” in the vicinity of Greenhill Primary School in Sheffield. A deer manager and a specialist veterinarian informed officers that administering a tranquiliser to sedate the animal was not feasible, as its effects would not be immediate. Despite the deer having left the school property, the determination was made to “humanely dispatch the animal out of view of the public” due to the “ongoing danger.” Janey, 41, a parent whose son attends the school, shared her perspective with the BBC, stating: “It’s really sad that he’s come out and got lost and got scared and it’s had to end the way it did.” She added: “I don’t know how long he was out for, but if it was over a longer period, perhaps something should’ve been done sooner and more humanely and didn’t have to end with him dying.” The deployment of an armed response also garnered criticism across social media platforms. An individual commented on Facebook: “The kids at Greenhill School will be very upset, my thoughts are why couldn’t they have found a way to save him.” Another user expressed: “I’m so shocked they shot this beautiful animal and disgusted it was frightened to death and had obviously lost its way.” The police force further stated: “We appreciate these incidents cause concern for the local community, and these decisions are never taken lightly.”
