Police Dogs Undergo Training to Detect Cybercrime Evidence

Humberside Police have announced that two police dogs are currently undergoing training to support investigations targeting criminals who leverage technology to commit offenses. The digital detection dogs, named Duke and Dexter, are participating in a six-week training program aimed at uncovering concealed items such as USB drives and mobile phones. Officers indicated that these items frequently serve as crucial evidence in criminal inquiries. Upon completion of their training, the dogs will collaborate with the force’s online investigation team (POLIT), which conducts investigations into the online sharing of child sexual exploitation material. The police stated that these two German Shorthaired Pointers are new additions to the force and represent a first for the region. POLIT Detective Inspector Andy Postill commented that the dogs would enhance their capability to combat online child exploitation. He elaborated that the dogs would provide assistance in locating evidence, stating, “Particularly when suspects attempt to conceal items such as SIM cards and USB drives.” Dog handler PC Steve Matthews remarked: “These two new recruits will bring a unique skill set to the team, and it is amazing to see the difference they can make.” He added, “I’m proud to be a part of this innovative approach to modern policing.”
