An anti-drugs initiative conducted in a city centre involved the deployment of a police dog. Cambridgeshire Police in Peterborough leveraged a passive drug detection dog to identify and discourage recreational drug consumption within the city centre’s night-time establishments. This operation, named Operation Indicative, marked the inaugural instance of such an initiative in the county and resulted in 10 stop and searches, according to police statements. Sergeant Paul Delmer, the leader of the operation, stated: “This is a tactic our colleagues from Nottinghamshire Police regularly use in their city centre, therefore we sought their support to run the operation here in Peterborough last week.” The operation was structured into two components; the initial phase involved employing a passive drugs dog to identify individuals who were, or had been, associated with or in possession of drugs. Individuals “indicated” by the dog were engaged by police officers, and if reasonable grounds were established, a stop and search procedure was conducted. Additionally, plain-clothed officers patrolled to provide extra surveillance for suspicious behaviour, supported by CCTV operators. The second component involved unannounced inspections of licensed premises by police and council licensing officers to verify that venues possessed appropriate licenses and adequate staffing for their capacity. Sergeant Delmer further commented: “We know that drug consumption mixed with alcohol can be a lethal combination often leading to violent or aggressive behaviour which we don’t want in our city when people are trying to enjoy themselves.” He continued: “As we enter the Christmas period and the city gets busier, its important people know the work we are doing alongside our partners and the night-time economy businesses to make our city as safe as possible.” He also noted: “The operation drew a lot of attention from members of the public who were interested in what we were doing so this was a good opportunity to educate them and explain what the operation was about.” Post navigation Man Sentenced for Murder After Victim Dies in Flat Fire Youth admits guilt in fatal street stabbing of woman
