A police force has issued a warning to the public regarding a fraudulent scheme involving purported lottery winnings. Bedfordshire Police reported that individuals have been defrauded of money and possessions after being approached by people offering to share lottery winnings, asserting an inability to collect the prizes personally “for immigration reasons.” The perpetrators proposed dividing the prize money but demanded an upfront deposit, which they subsequently absconded with. The police department noted that all these occurrences exhibited “very similar methodology.” Police stated that four victims had money and valuables totaling £50,000 stolen in distinct incidents occurring between September 27 and October 24, spanning Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. In each instance, the victims, predominantly men of South Asian heritage, were accosted on the street by two individuals feigning possession of a winning lottery ticket that they purportedly could not redeem due to immigration constraints. One of the male suspects was characterized as Eastern European, while the other was described as being of South Asian heritage. The two individuals were observed communicating via phone with a third male who asserted affiliation with the National Lottery. They proposed dividing the prize money if the victim would cash the lottery ticket, subsequently requesting either currency or jewelry as a security deposit. The victims were transported to their residences to retrieve the valuable items, but once the perpetrators obtained these possessions, they departed. Det Sgt Greg Davenport, of Bedfordshire Police’s Force Intelligence Bureau, commented: “These incidents happened in Greyfriars in Bedford, Marsh Road in Luton as well as in Watford and Potters Bar. But they all have very similar methodology.” He added: “We clearly would like to hear from anyone who has information about these incidents but it is also really important that people are aware of this scam and on their guard.” The police force has cautioned the public to exercise vigilance regarding individuals who unexpectedly approach them with propositions for financial gain and exert pressure for immediate action. Any questionable conduct ought to be reported to law enforcement. Updates concerning Beds, Herts, and Bucks news can be accessed via BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
