Police Appeal After Concrete Thrown from Bridge Strikes Van

Police have reported that a van driver narrowly avoided being struck by a substantial piece of concrete launched from a bridge. This incident, which occurred on Thursday in Talavera Way, Northampton, is part of a series of similar events spanning four days. The vehicle’s bonnet sustained significant damage, and authorities described the potential outcomes of the assault as “catastrophic.” This marks the third occasion in recent days that police have received reports of young individuals throwing objects from bridges onto the heavily trafficked A5076. Consequently, law enforcement officials are urging parents to discuss the associated dangers with their children. PC Polly Scott, a member of Northampton’s neighbourhood policing team, stated: “This behaviour might seem like a prank or dare to young people, but it could easily kill someone.” She elaborated on the severity of the latest event, noting: “The most recent incident involved a large block, which completely destroyed the front of the van it struck.” PC Scott further emphasized the potential danger: “If it had hit that vehicle, even just a few inches further back, the consequences could have been catastrophic. Behaviour like this is genuinely putting lives at risk, so we’re asking everyone to talk to the young people they know to help them understand the risks to others and the consequences they would face.” Police confirmed that the driver sustained no injuries, and a minimum of five motorists have now been impacted by these occurrences. Objects have been hurled onto Talavera Way from bridges situated in the Southfields and Round Spinney vicinities, typically occurring after nightfall. The perpetrators reportedly flee the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement. As a result, officers intend to increase their patrol presence in the affected locality. Authorities issued a warning that these incidents are being classified as the more severe offense of causing danger to road users, rather than merely criminal damage.
