A police and crime commissioner (PCC) has cautioned that victims of crime believe they have been “failed” by the criminal justice system. This warning follows recent statistics indicating nearly 1,000 unresolved cases at Norwich Crown Court, a consequence of unprecedented backlogs across England and Wales. Sarah Taylor, who assumed the role of Norfolk’s PCC in May, stated that delayed trials are a source of concern for county residents she has engaged with, leading individuals to feel it was “putting their hopes of justice on hold”. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) commented that it inherited a criminal justice system “in crisis” with a court backlog record that was still increasing, but affirmed its commitment to “bearing down on the backlog”. “A lot of people have told me about the problems they have faced with the wider criminal justice system,” Ms Taylor said. She added, “Victims of crime have been asking for help and have said they feel they are being failed.” This sentiment, she noted, is due to issues such as extended waits for trials that are subsequently rescheduled. The wellbeing of young people was a frequently raised concern, with certain services, including youth groups, experiencing cuts due to a lack of funding. Ms Taylor further stated: “I have heard from lots of front-line staff like teachers that there are gaps in safety nets for children.” The PCC has outlined a series of priorities as part of her public consultation, which is scheduled to run until 2 November. These priorities include restoring trust in policing, focusing on the prevention of crime, and improving road safety. An MoJ spokesperson remarked: “Whilst we are bound by a difficult financial inheritance we are committed to bearing down on the backlog.” The spokesperson also indicated, “We will soon extend magistrates’ sentencing powers from six to 12 months, freeing up 2,000 days in the Crown Courts to handle the most serious cases.” Post navigation Man Accused of Murder Was Subject to Contact Ban, Trial Hears Police suggest vehicle collision in death of man found in Moray
