Sixteen pupils from schools in Plymouth have been granted the opportunity to feature in a local theatre’s pantomime. More than 60 young individuals auditioned for the Theatre Royal Plymouth’s production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. These children will perform alongside Lesley Joseph of Birds of a Feather and the broadcaster and barrister Rob Rinder. Head chaperone Jo McCarthy noted that there is “very, very little opportunity outside of London and Manchester” and “this is one of the only ones” for children interested in acting. Romeo, one of the children new to performing, remarked: “You are just getting that opportunity, it’s once in a lifetime.” Pupil Amy stated: “It’s great, being on stage and making new friends.” Mollie shared that she enjoyed the challenge, adding that “it’s exciting because you always get to learn new things.” The chaperones are responsible for teaching the young performers their choreography and guiding them to their correct positions for their cues. Ms McCarthy, who has served as a chaperone for 15 years, commented: “They learn to work as a team, the discipline of the theatre, to pick up routines, the experience they get is incredible.” She further added: “We look at children who did the panto down here 10 years ago, and they are now in the West End. It’s a massive opportunity.” Follow BBC Devon on X, Facebook and Instagram. Send your story ideas to spotlight@bbc.co.uk.Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
