Plymouth City Council announced that a text or phone message would be dispatched to residents around 15:00 GMT. The council stated that this alert will be sent to those who have subscribed to its emergency notification system, emphasizing that no action is required from recipients. The authority indicated that the alert serves to inform the public in the “unlikely event of a major incident” at the dockyard or at the fuels terminal situated in Cattedown. According to the Royal Navy, Devonport stands as the largest naval base in western Europe. These messages are designed to warn and inform the public in the event of a significant incident at the dockyard, which is a regulated facility supervised by the Office for Nuclear Regulation. On its official website, the council advises residents to keep a list of crucial contacts readily available. It also recommended assembling a care package, designating an emergency contact point, and tuning into a local radio station.
