A £100,000 funding allocation has been designated for community organizations, charities, and churches in Plymouth, enabling them to operate throughout the winter period. Plymouth City Council announced that the initiative’s objective is to provide warm and inviting spaces from December through March. Funding will be distributed among thirty-four organizations in Plymouth, allowing them to extend their operating hours. According to the council, these locations will offer individuals a “warm, safe space to spend time in and many of them provide extras such as free wi-fi, cooking facilities, activities or refreshments.” Participants include the Southway Community Group, which provides a warm space for the entire community, and the YMCA in Honicknowle, offering complimentary hot drinks and games. Councillor Chris Penberthy, the cabinet member for housing, cooperative development, and communities, commented that the welcoming spaces initiative “helped tackle social isolation and improve mental wellbeing.” He further stated, “I’m really pleased that this year we’ve been able to fund more welcoming spaces than ever before, and we’ve tried to ensure that there is a wide geographical spread.” The council’s website lists over 50 welcoming spaces, encompassing various venues such as libraries, wellbeing hubs, community centres, and churches.
