A fire in a Plymouth block of flats prompted the evacuation of residents from their residences. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue (DSFRS) reported that emergency teams responded to the incident in a three-story structure around 08:20 GMT. The operation to combat the fire involved six fire appliances and an aerial ladder platform. The individual residing in the affected ground-floor flat was safely removed, and occupants of adjacent homes were also evacuated. Watch manager Tim Quiterio praised the “fantastic” efforts of the crews managing the situation, confirming the fire was under control. He stated: “Crews are dampening down and making sure the area is safe. They were checking to make sure there was no fire spread to the roof itself and the integrity of the roof is good.” Mr. Quiterio noted that while it was premature to determine the full extent of the fire, there was “quite a lot of charring outside around the windows”. Mr. Quiterio emphasized fire safety, remarking: “This time of year it’s coming towards Christmas time, accidents do happen. It’s really important we do try and remember those safety measures. If the fire alarm does go off you should get out, stay out and call the fire service. We really encourage everyone to make sure they have a smoke alarm on every level of the house.” He added that, fortunately, this particular property was equipped with a smoke alarm, and no individuals sustained severe injuries. The fire service confirmed that a DSFRS fire investigator is currently conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the incident.
