A proposal has been submitted to transform a former riverside public house into a five-bedroom residence. The establishment, named The Dog in a Doublet, situated on the North Bank of River Nene in Thorney, was previously operated by John McGinn, a former MasterChef contestant, prior to its closure in January 2023. Since then, it has been vacant and has fallen into disrepair. A planning application has been lodged with Peterborough City Council, on behalf of Quaffins Ltd, requesting a change in the building’s use and the demolition of some of its existing extensions. According to the planning statement, should the application be approved, the first floor would contain four bedrooms, while an additional bedroom would be located on the main ground floor, alongside a kitchen, utility room, study, a combined living/dining area, and a snug. The principal vehicle and pedestrian access points are slated to remain unaltered. Developers expressed an intention to decrease the building’s overall scale through demolition, with the aim of “taking the building back to what it was in the late 1970s,” as outlined in the plans. The council’s planning authority has yet to issue a determination on the application.
