A planning application has been lodged with the Leicester City Council proposing the conversion of a local bar into student housing. The establishment, Ronnie Roos, located on Millstone Lane, commenced operations in 2018, occupying the premises previously home to the Boot Room restaurant. The bar ceased operations for customers in May, as reported by the local Campaign for Real Ale website. Documents submitted as part of the planning application to Leicester City Council indicate that the venue will not resume business, asserting that its function as a bar is “unsuitable” due to the surrounding residential properties. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that the building housing the establishment was predominantly converted into apartments during the pandemic, though the bar itself continued to serve customers on the ground floor. Bosworth Properties Ltd, the applicant, attributed the closure partly to “falling numbers” of patrons and partly to “noise issues” affecting the resident students. The developer is requesting authorization to construct 13 additional flats, supplementing the existing student accommodations within the building. Furthermore, a roof extension is planned above the previous bar section to establish “additional” living space. A public consultation regarding this proposal is scheduled to conclude on 16 January, with the city council aiming for a decision by 27 February.
