Proposals for a multimillion-pound facility on the Isle of Man, intended for the cultivation and exportation of medicinal cannabis, have received official approval from planners. The planning committee has granted its consent to GrowLab Organics (Glo)’s project to construct a dedicated complex and its main offices in Ballasalla. Alex Fray, representing the company, stated that this development, marking the first of its nature on the island, is anticipated to be completed within a year, with exports commencing by 2026. Glo obtained a licence in 2022 to cultivate, extract, manufacture, import, and export the substance, following legislative amendments enacted the preceding year. The company’s application indicated the potential creation of 60 employment opportunities within three years, spanning various skill sets and remuneration brackets. Located within the Ronaldsway Industrial Estate, the 6.5-acre (2.6-hectare) plot will accommodate growing rooms featuring controlled atmospheres and LED illumination, in addition to areas for plant processing, storage, and distribution. Planned security provisions encompass a perimeter fence, CCTV surveillance, safes, and strongrooms for product storage. The project, slated for construction in a zone allocated for industrial growth, will also involve establishing a new electricity substation to fulfill the facility’s power demands. Questions arose regarding energy consumption and a possible rise in emissions, given the three megawatts of power needed for the complex’s operation. However, Glo affirmed its intention to utilize renewable electricity sourced via the island’s current interconnector. Manx Utilities further verified that there was “sufficient capacity” to satisfy this demand, thus precluding any “increase in emissions”. Mr. Fray commented: “We understand this is something new and something big therefore a high degree of scrutiny is understandable and to be expected.” He expressed being “delighted” that the initiative could move forward following public engagement, adding that Glo would now seek to engage contractors, anticipating the structure’s completion within 12 months. He further indicated that an additional two months would be required to operationalize the cultivation center and prepare the medicinal cannabis for market.
