A trial is underway for a mobile safe space designed to provide assistance to women and girls who may be vulnerable during evening activities. This pilot initiative, a collaboration between the Bristol Business Improvement District (BID) and Avon and Somerset Police, is operating in Orchard Street throughout the weekend, concluding in the early morning of 8 December. According to the organisers, the objective is to decrease violence targeting women and girls, with the potential for the trial to become a permanent fixture if it proves effective. Vicky Lee, director of BID, expressed the hope that this initiative will create a “meaningful difference” in assisting “those who may feel vulnerable at night.” The facility will be secure, allowing individuals to seek assistance, wait securely for friends or family, and access support services as required. Staffed by volunteers, its operational hours are from 21:00 to 06:00 GMT, providing essential amenities like phone charging and first aid, alongside a designated area for women to await friends and family. Ms Lee stated that the space will collaborate with other local programs, including Bristol Street Pastors and the Alcohol Recovery Centre, aiming to link individuals with established services while also offering immediate assistance. She further commented, “With the support of our community partners, we hope to make a meaningful difference, particularly in reducing incidents against women and girls.” Detective Sergeant Emily Welch of Avon and Somerset Police remarked: “After seeing similar initiatives prove successful in other big cities, we believe providing a temporary safe space for members of the public can also make a difference in our city, with its two universities and thriving nightlife.” For updates, follow BBC Bristol on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
