Despite an injury-plagued start to the season, Oxford United winger Matt Phillips asserts his continued capacity to be a valuable asset for his Championship club. The 33-year-old, who transferred from West Bromwich Albion in the summer, has only participated in six league matches to date, starting in merely three of them. Des Buckingham’s team currently occupies the 17th position in the Championship standings, holding a one-point and four-place advantage over Plymouth Argyle, their scheduled opponents for Saturday. Speaking to BBC Radio Oxford, Phillips commented, “Credit to everyone, the medical team, sports science, the manager as well, they’ve been patient.” He added, “It’s maybe something that I’ve probably got to do better – understanding what my body needs a bit more – especially in terms of recovery.” While Phillips is approaching the latter stages of his professional career, his extensive experience could be vital for the U’s, particularly as he aims to make an impact in what marks his 10th season in the second tier. He further asserted, “I still believe that I have got something to offer at this level.” Phillips concluded by stating, “I just want to get myself back to 100% sharpness, fitness, and give my best to the team.”
