An initiative has commenced in Hartlepool aimed at relocating the town’s Christmas tree, which some describe as “hidden,” to a more visible site. Over 750 individuals have endorsed a petition advocating for the festive tree’s transfer from its current position behind the church on Church Street to the Cenotaph on Victoria Road. Denis Lindridge, a proponent of the relocation, stated that the tree’s present placement was too “out of the way” for residents to fully appreciate. Hartlepool Borough Council indicated that while immediate action for this year was not feasible, they would “consider” relocating the tree in the coming year. Mr. Lindridge further explained that the current location makes it challenging for large gatherings, such as carol singers, to assemble around the tree. He remarked, “Wouldn’t it be nice for people to gather round – schools groups who’ve shown interest?” He added, “The tree is our tree, the people of Hartlepool, it’s not the people in the council – we feel quite strongly about it.” The borough council confirmed that the petition is under review. A council spokesperson elaborated, stating, “Given that the installation of the town’s Christmas lights is already under way and plans for our switch-on event are well advanced, we do not realistically have the time to construct the new pit that would be required for the tree if it were to be relocated this year.” The spokesperson concluded, “However, we are happy to consider moving it to a new location from next year.”
