A petition advocating for the installation of speed cameras on the A52, in the vicinity of Skegness, has been initiated by a woman subsequent to a fatal head-on collision involving a moped rider. The incident occurred on Saturday, when a 23-year-old individual lost their life after their Zontes Firefly 125cc moped was involved in a collision with a Ford C-Max and a Nissan Micra. This event took place at Croft Bank around 20:45 GMT. Annalise Smith, a resident residing close to the site of the collision, has advocated for the implementation of an average speed check system with the aim of decreasing accident rates. According to Lincolnshire Police, a 19-year-old individual who had been apprehended on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving was subsequently released as part of an ongoing investigation. Ms. Smith stated that learning of the fatality prompted her to initiate the petition. She remarked, “Losing a life is sad anyway but especially when it’s so close to Christmas.” The mother of three children further commented, “The last thing I want is for any of them to get in an accident.” Regarding the road, the 24-year-old observed, “There are so many bends as you get closer to Skegness, and people become too impatient.” She continued, “Nothing is really going to stop reckless driving, but an average speed check camera from Wainfleet up to Skegness where it drops from a 50mph into a 30mph zone would make sense.” The Local Democracy Reporting Service reported that Ms. Smith indicated a minimum of seven fatalities have occurred on that particular section of road since June 2021. She further questioned, “How many more lives need to be lost? How much more heartbreak do people need to go through for something to happen?” To date, Ms. Smith’s petition has gathered over 470 signatures, and local councillors have committed to convening with highways officials early next year to address the matter.
