Peterborough Cathedral is seeking to establish a conference facility within one of its structures, a move intended to improve its financial stability. The cathedral has submitted an application to convert a section of its existing Visitor and Learning Centre into St Oswald’s Conference Centre, designated for corporate use. The planning statement indicates that the proposed facility would “bring new opportunities for professional gatherings within one of the city’s most celebrated landmarks.” It further stated that “Importantly, the expanded use will ensure the longevity of use of the building which would otherwise have to be closed for economic reasons.” The location currently in question was transformed from a residential property in 2013. Since then, it has functioned as a venue for meetings, lectures, a library, a cafe, and a heritage centre. While the top floor will continue to be dedicated to educational activities, portions of the building are intended for lease for business meetings, conferences, workshops, as well as corporate and personal events. The planning application noted that provisional bookings have commenced, with the city council, Chamber of Commerce, Peterborough Positive, and the Prison Service “all indicating that they will book spaces.” The statement also conveyed: “The current position running at a loss cannot be sustained and the building will need to be closed down if its occupancy, and therefore income, cannot be increased.” The proposal includes the part-time employment of a concierge and a cleaner to manage the premises. Should the plans receive approval, the cathedral anticipates launching the centre in September.
