Filming for the forthcoming Peaky Blinders movie has commenced in north Wales, where actor Cillian Murphy was observed on location. The Oscar-winning performer reprises his role as Tommy Shelby for the anticipated Peaky Blinders film, which extends the popular crime drama’s narrative. The successful BBC television series previously ran for six seasons, and the forthcoming movie will further the saga of Shelby and the Peaky Blinders criminal organization. The film, which is set in Birmingham during World War II, commenced principal photography at the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, located near Wrexham, on Sunday. Local business owner Chris Allen stated, “Locals knew that filming would be taking place in the basin, but no one knew what for – the crew were keeping it well under wraps.” Murphy was observed on a narrowboat, dressed in his complete Tommy Shelby attire, including his distinctive cap, as filming commenced along the aqueduct and adjacent waterways on Sunday afternoon. In addition to Trevor Basin, the Unesco World Heritage Site, its visitor centre, and the towpath were inaccessible to the public. Beyond the cast and ground personnel, a helicopter was also deployed, apparently capturing aerial views of the performers below. Mr. Allen further commented, “People soon twigged that it was Peaky Blinders – the steam-powered narrowboat and the actor’s clothing gave that away.” He added, “Locals who’d gathered to watch started spotting and recognising them. Cillian Murphy stands out! It was an exciting day.” The narrowboat used by Murphy featured period signage for ‘W.G.E. Wyrley & Essington’, while a second vessel displayed a sign stating: ‘Thomas Coathupe & Sons Ltd – 1893’. The 48-year-old Irish performer is set to appear alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Stephen Graham, and Tim Roth in the forthcoming film, which is also titled Peaky Blinder: The Immortal Man. Another Irish actor, Barry Keoghan, was recently announced as joining the Peaky Blinders ensemble, although he has not yet been seen at the filming location. Although Murphy’s narrowboat was observed in Wrexham, similar vessels have been sighted at various sites throughout the UK as production for the upcoming movie progresses, such as Birmingham and Dudley. A release date for the Peaky Blinders film has not yet been announced. Peaky Blinders chronicles the ascent of the fictional Peaky Blinders criminal organization in Birmingham in the aftermath of World War I. Under the leadership of the ambitious Tommy Shelby, the group encounters opposition from law enforcement and competing factions, such as the Irish Mob and the New York Mafia. The Peaky Blinders series first premiered on television in 2013, with all installments accessible on BBC iPlayer. Across its six seasons, the program featured Murphy alongside notable actors including Sam Neill, Tom Hardy, Paddy Considine, Anya Taylor-Joy, among numerous others. A seventh season of Peaky Blinders will not be produced. The series concluded in 2022 with its sixth and ultimate season; however, creator Steven Knight promptly affirmed that Tommy Shelby’s narrative would persist. The forthcoming feature film was developed as an alternative to a seventh season, with the possibility of subsequent related television programs. Tom Harper is helming the Peaky Blinders film, working from a screenplay by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who also serves as a producer alongside Patrick Holland, Cillian Murphy, and Guy Heeley.
