BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty has been responding to questions from readers. Mike submitted an inquiry noting Manchester United’s position, which is ‘only’ six points adrift of fourth place, yet with numerous teams situated between them. Mike contended that not all teams currently above United would drop more points than they do, suggesting a shift in focus from securing fourth place to concentrating on improvement for the next season, stating, “Where we finish is where we finish.” He pondered whether “instant gratification or a lack of knowledge among many fans” was at play, explaining that a new coach does not simply declare, “‘Now we set up like this, you play this position and problem solved’.” Mike stressed that “It takes a lot of time and practice to replace old ways and habits with new ones,” advocating for patience and suggesting judgment be deferred until the new season. He then sought Phil’s perspective on the likelihood of Manchester United’s improvement. Phil McNulty acknowledged these as “very good points,” noting that Ruben Amorim himself expressed many similar sentiments after the draw at Ipswich Town. Amorim had indicated that Manchester United would have to “suffer” as he implements his tactical adjustments, stating it was worth risking things tactically now to feel the benefit next season. McNulty confirmed that patience would be necessary, adding that, in his experience, Manchester United fans are “remarkably patient with their managers.” He observed that Amorim has already demonstrated a clear identity in his desired playing style and a distinct strategic approach, which McNulty felt was not consistently evident from Erik ten Hag. McNulty stated his belief that United would improve, and he also added that he “wouldn’t write off fourth place either, because I really believe that slot is wide open.” Nevertheless, he cautioned that this process would require “time and patience, and there will be bumps along the way.”
