A pub that sustained damage after being struck by a lorry is slated for partial demolition. This measure aims to enhance the overall stability of the site. The incident occurred in November when a lorry collided with two structures on the A49 in Bayston Hill, Shropshire. The collision impacted the Three Fishes Pub and the adjoining Hong Kong City takeaway. According to National Highways, engineers who assessed the pub determined that stabilization efforts alone would not achieve the necessary structural integrity. Consequently, a section of the building must be removed. Shropshire Council reported that it is continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating with National Highways to help alleviate any potential disruption. Following the crash, temporary traffic lights were installed on the A49. These are anticipated to stay in operation as investigations into the buildings proceed. Local residents and business owners have attributed congestion in the vicinity to these temporary lights. On Thursday, National Highways stated, “Until this work is complete and we are given the assurance that the buildings no longer pose a risk to road users or pedestrians, the temporary traffic lights must remain on the A49.” They added, “We appreciate the delays and frustration these lights are causing, but safety is our top priority.” National Highways has also recommended that road users consider alternative routes when feasible. A spokesperson further indicated that work on the pub is scheduled to commence shortly, and they are awaiting an update regarding repairs to the other affected property. The lorry driver was extricated and transported to a hospital after the collision on 11 November. At the time of the incident, the pub had already been sold and was awaiting handover to its new owners. Follow BBC Shropshire on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram. Copyright 2024 BBC.
