Over 60 members of a bowls club found themselves unable to leave their car park for several hours after a vehicle obstructed the sole exit. The incident occurred at Maldon Bowling Club in Essex as its annual presentation evening concluded, with members realizing departure was impossible due to a Smart car positioned across the dropped kerb. The adjacent road experienced increased traffic volume concurrently with the town’s fireworks display, as initially reported by the Maldon Standard. According to club coach Carole Ash, another driver subsequently arrived and managed to maneuver their vehicle forward, thereby freeing the stranded bowlers. Mrs Ash informed the BBC, “When someone decided to leave our gathering early and came straight back, we all wondered what was going on.” She continued, “We went outside and it was unbelievable – the car was parked right across our entrance.” Ash added, “People just started saying ‘we’re blocked in’ and people walking past were just amazed.” She recounted that approximately at 19:00 GMT on 2 November, the driver of a different car came back to retrieve an item from their vehicle. Mrs Ash stated, “Thank goodness she did,” clarifying that the driver successfully cleared the path by repositioning her vehicle. She quoted, “[She] saved the day… but it still wasn’t easy.” Ash further detailed, “Every time someone wanted to leave, one of us had to stand in the road and carefully guide them between the cars, because visibility was so limited.” She concluded, “If it hadn’t been so bad, it would be laughable.” Updates on Essex news are available via BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
