A woman has entered a guilty plea to the murder of another woman, whose human remains were located at various sites throughout south and south-west London. Sarah Mayhew, aged 38, was last observed in Sutton on the night of March 8. Portions of her remains were located in Rowdown Field, Croydon, during April, with additional discoveries made in the River Wandle, Mitcham, in May. Gemma Watts, 49 years old, residing in Croydon, formally admitted guilt at the Old Bailey for charges of murder and obstructing the course of justice. Her partner, Steven Sansom, 45, from Sutton in south-west London, had earlier confessed to the identical crimes. The pair are scheduled for sentencing in January at the Old Bailey, though the specific date remains unconfirmed. Judge Mark Lucraft KC stated that a life sentence was the sole penalty permissible for each defendant. The specifics of the accusations indicated that Watts murdered Sarah Mayhew at some point between March 7 and April 3, 2024, and that within this identical timeframe, she obstructed the course of justice by dismembering the victim’s body, discarding it in multiple places, and subsequently sanitizing the crime scene. During the hearing, Watts denied three additional charges of creating indecent images of children, which will be kept on file. Sansom had a prior conviction in 1999, as a teenager, for the murder of a taxi driver. Individuals convicted of murder remain on licence for the remainder of their lives upon release from prison, and must adhere to specific conditions, such as being under the oversight of probation authorities. Typically, an inquiry is conducted if another serious offense is perpetrated while an individual is on licence or under probation supervision. The Ministry of Justice verified that a review concerning a serious further offence is presently in progress. The Ministry has not yet confirmed if any disciplinary measures have been implemented against any probation personnel. At an earlier hearing, Sansom also denied three charges of creating indecent images of children, and the prosecution had stated that those accusations would be kept on file.
