Paignton Pier is set to host its inaugural festive light display this Christmas season. This £25,000 illumination will span the full 800ft (243m) extent of the historic pier, running from Saturday until January 5. According to John Martin, the pier’s director, the concept was prompted by the success of Torquay’s yearly Bay of Lights event. “We thought we are letting Paignton down and it’s such an iconic structure to put decorations on, so we have decided to put a display on,” he stated. He mentioned that the lights on the nearly 150-year-old pier will be activated daily starting at 16:00 GMT. “As a beloved local landmark, we feel it’s our duty to bring festive cheer to Paignton and encourage other businesses to join us in making this a tradition,” he added. The directors anticipate the display will expand annually. Co-director Jolene Wallis commented, “By extending the season, we’re creating opportunities to offer more work hours to our team during what is typically a quiet period.” She also stated, “And personally, I wanted the children of Paignton to have a bright, Christmassy place to visit after school.” She added that the display offers enjoyment for everyone, even for families who simply park along the seafront to view the illuminations.
