Oxford is scheduled to host an Olympics-style sporting event next summer, specifically for individuals who have undergone organ transplants. The 2025 British Transplant Games are expected to draw over a thousand athletes to various city venues for a competitive weekend from 31 July to 3 August. This multi-sport festival, managed by the charity Transplant Active, will include competitors spanning ages from three to over eighty. Dr Paul Harden, who chairs the charity, stated its goal is to “empower transplant recipients to optimise their gift of life through an active lifestyle”. Dr Harden, an Oxford resident, will also chair the 2025 games taking place in his city. He indicated that the games seek to “raise awareness about the transformative power of organ donation”. He further remarked, “Together, we can celebrate the inspiring achievements of transplanted athletes and honour the gift of life through promoting the critical importance of organ donation.” These games have been held every year since 1978, featuring competition among teams from 60 hospitals throughout the UK. Among the participants representing Oxford is 18 year-old Blossom Martin, who underwent a transplant from her mother 18 months ago. At the games’ launch event, held at Blenheim Palace, Blossom informed the BBC that she was “really excited” to participate in the “amazing event”. She also commented, “I’m just really grateful, it [her transplant] has been a lifesaving gift”. Adam Isaac, a past participant in the games, will also be competing for team Oxford. He stated that the “most important” aspect of the event was the “social element”. He elaborated, “People are going through the same situation, and [its a chance to] share their stories and connect with each other.” Oxford previously served as the host city for the European Transplant Games in 2022.
