An Oxford-based charity is encouraging consumers to choose pre-owned party outfits instead of new purchases, aiming to conserve both finances and the environment. A recent survey conducted by Oxfam revealed that approximately 30% of adults acknowledged wearing new festive garments only a single time. The organization estimated that if all adults in the UK opted for second-hand clothing, it could avert 66 million kilogrammes of detrimental emissions, a quantity comparable to 822 flights from London to the North Pole. Lorna Fallon, Oxfam’s retail director, stated that appearing presentable during the holiday season “doesn’t have to be at the expense of our planet”. The survey’s findings also indicated the following: Oxfam reported that 73% of British individuals purchasing new attire anticipated spending between £10 and £60. Ms. Lorna Fallon commented that by opting for second-hand purchases at Oxfam, “you can find a beautiful outfit that is new to you”. She further added, “And also help reduce the demand for new clothes, help our planet and raise vital funds to tackle poverty and inequality around the world.” “We all want to look and feel good over the festive party season, but it doesn’t have to be at the expense of our planet.” Supermodel Eunice Olumide, known for offering advice on excelling in second-hand fashion, stated, “we all need to be thinking about shopping more sustainably”. She continued, “… you can find something just as show-stopping and fabulous by shopping second-hand and helping the planet.” You can follow BBC Oxfordshire on Facebook, X (Twitter), or Instagram.
