A local human rights organization reports that Venezuelan authorities have freed over 100 individuals who were detained in the aftermath of the disputed presidential election held in July. Alfredo Romero, from the NGO Foro Penal, stated, “Up to now, we have verified 107 political prisoners, due to the post-electoral situation, released in Venezuela.” Foro Penal also indicated that over 1,800 individuals had been apprehended for their involvement in widespread demonstrations that followed the July election. While electoral officials aligned with President Nicolás Maduro declared him the winner, this assertion has faced extensive disapproval from the international community. Following Maduro’s declaration of victory, anti-government demonstrations broke out. Human Rights Watch reported that hundreds of people have been indicted on charges such as terrorism, incitement to hatred, and resistance to authority. Foro Penal reported that the releases occurred at four distinct correctional facilities. Social media videos depicted detainees being freed amidst cheers from observers. President Maduro is scheduled to commence his third six-year presidential term in January. The National Electoral Council (CNE) published official results for the July election, stating that Maduro, aged 61, secured 52% of the votes, while opposition candidate Edmundo González received 43%. Conversely, the opposition asserted that it possessed evidence indicating González had won with a significant lead, and it posted comprehensive voting tallies online that implied González decisively defeated Maduro. The CNE explained its inability to publish the voting records by stating that the data had been compromised by hackers. In September, González was granted political asylum in Spain.
