An official announcement has confirmed that a swimming pool experienced a “surge in visitors” during the summer period. The Vale of White Horse District Council, in conjunction with leisure provider Better, reported that Abbey Meadow pool, located in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, attracted 15,000 patrons throughout the 2024 season, marking a 122% increase compared to the preceding year. This attendance growth occurred even though the outdoor facility did not commence operations until July 20, a delay that campaigner Naomi Richardson had previously described as “disappointing”. The facility had faced potential closure in 2015 but subsequently reopened in 2018 following a £1.3 million renovation project. The council attributed the triumph of the 2024 season – during which its water play area and kiosk became accessible on May 25 and the pool concluded operations on September 8 – as “testament to the pool’s growing popularity”. It stated: “The surge in visitors was not only due to the great weather – but also thanks to the introduction of a wide range of new activities that catered to all ages and interests.” These offerings encompassed swimming lessons, diving classes, aqua aerobics sessions, a Meet the Mermaid-day event, a half-term Hawaii party, and the inaugural end-of-season dog swim. Sue Caul, the cabinet member responsible for leisure facilities, commented that the pool had delivered “so much enjoyment” to the community. She further remarked: “We’re proud that we can provide local residents with such a fantastic way to spend their summer holidays. “There were so many fantastic activities and events on offer this year.” Kevin Williams, Better’s partnership manager, stated: “As we reflect on this fantastic season, we are filled with gratitude for the unwavering support from our local community. “The events, activities, and overall success of the pool this summer are a direct result of this incredible partnership between Abbey Meadows and the people we serve.” Ms. Richardson, who advocated for the pool’s refurbishment, commented: “We’ve always said that the pool is a great asset for Abingdon and that it’s a really important part of the community.” She added: “But to only open it for the school holidays in the summer essentially is a little bit short-sighted and there’s many people who would enjoy using it a little bit earlier in the year.” She expressed her hope that in the coming year, the operators would “build” upon the pool’s achievements and broaden its promotion. She concluded: “I think there’s lots of opportunities to leverage the popularity of the pool for the town and for the benefit of the community.” The council has previously indicated its intention to explore methods for implementing a “longer season in future”.
