An organised crime group has been imprisoned for their role in an attempt to import over £90 million worth of cocaine into the United Kingdom, concealed within a consignment of bananas. Maidstone Crown Court sentenced the six individuals from the group, along with a complicit security guard, to a collective prison term of 74 years. Evidence presented in court revealed that more than one tonne of cocaine was secreted inside a container aboard a vessel that reached the Port of Sheerness in Kent, having sailed from Costa Rica in December 2021. Judge Catherine Moore stated: “This was undoubtedly a highly sophisticated commercial enterprise, importing cocaine into this country by the tonne.” The judge informed the gang members that they were “driven by your own selfish greed.” She added: “Drugs have a devastating impact on society and individuals, it fuels other crimes including violence and dishonesty and you have played a part in perpetuating it.” The illicit scheme was thwarted after a two-month surveillance operation conducted by the National Crime Agency (NCA), leading to the arrest of some gang members as they attempted to recover the illicit cargo. Testimony in court indicated that Joel McCaughey, 34, a leader from Castlefield in Manchester, had supervised the loading of the narcotics in Costa Rica and stood to gain £400,000 from the operation. Subsequently, members of the group received instruction on operating a forklift truck, which had been acquired specifically to assist in retrieving the drugs. Furthermore, the group compensated Sam Elphick, a 30-year-old local security guard residing in Melody Close, who was employed at the port, to grant them entry and serve as their lookout. Upon their arrival in two vans, five individuals from the gang were apprehended when 100 police officers descended upon the port. Paul Orchard, a senior investigating officer with the NCA, commented after the proceedings: “The group are the exact type of group that the NCA target – high end, high harm and those most damaging to the community.” He further stated: “There is no doubt had the NCA and our partners not interdicted and disrupted this organised crew, this group would have continued to flood in drugs at an enormous quantity into the UK.” The six male members of the gang pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to import Class A drugs. McCaughey, whose address was Whitworth Street West, received a prison sentence of 13 years and four months, while Danny Laird, 41, of Spencer Close, Buntingford in Hertfordshire, was given a sentence of 14 years and eight months. Darren Laurie, 53, who had no fixed address, was incarcerated for 12 years and four months. Michael Turner, 57, from Buntingford, was handed an 11-year sentence. Kyle Davidson, 33, of Parker Drive in Buntingford, received a ten-year sentence. Ian Woodward, 36, of Standon Road in Ware, was imprisoned for 11 years and three months. Elphick, who admitted guilt to participating in the activities of an organised crime group, was sentenced to two years.
