Ontario has launched a multi-million dollar advertising campaign in the United States, promoting itself as an “ally to the north” after Donald Trump’s warning of tariffs on all Canadian products. President-elect Trump previously stated his intention to levy a 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican imports upon assuming office, unless both nations fortified their common borders with the US. Ontario Premier Doug Ford characterized the potential tariff as akin to “a family member stabbing you right in the heart”. The Canadian province, central to the deeply interconnected automotive sector, anticipates significant adverse effects from the proposed tax. Commercial exchange between Ontario and the United States reached over C$493 billion (equivalent to $350 billion) in 2023. The 60-second advertisement, which debuted on Monday, is scheduled to be broadcast across the US during the holiday period. Its placements include Fox News and broadcasts of National Football League games. Furthermore, it will be displayed at airports in Washington DC, and subsequently on billboards and via the Fox Sports app in digital formats within crucial US states. The commercial commences with the statement: “For generations, this ally to the North has been by your side: Ontario, Canada, a partner connected by shared history, shared values and a shared vision for what we can achieve together.” It highlights that Ontario, home to 16 million residents, serves as the third-largest trading partner for the US and is the main export market for 17 American states. Vic Fedeli, the provincial trade minister, informed Global News on Monday that the advertisement is expected to reach 100 million viewers, with “even more on Monday Night Football”. Ontario officials indicated that the advertising initiative had been under development for several months and forms part of an effort to engage US legislators. Trump’s proposed tariffs have generated considerable concern in Canada, and specialists caution that they could also significantly impact American sectors such as auto manufacturing, agriculture, and food processing. Collectively, Mexico, China, and Canada are responsible for over one-third of the total goods and services imported and exported by the US, thereby sustaining tens of millions of American employment positions. The potential implementation of the tariffs by the forthcoming administration is still uncertain, with analysts observing that Trump has a history of employing such warnings as a bargaining strategy. On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Trump for dinner at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago estate, aiming to avert the substantial tariffs. Trump characterized the meal as a “very productive meeting,” while Trudeau referred to it as an “excellent conversation.”
