An online fundraising initiative has collected over £11,000 to assist a British national who sustained injuries in an accident while employed in Thailand. Andy Davis, aged 33, from Walton, Staffordshire, had been instructing English to children in Thailand for several years. His injuries occurred on an island situated near Krabi. According to his friend, Mike Pugh, Mr. Davis’s injuries include a crushed leg that necessitated amputation, a shattered pelvis, and a torn bladder. All these conditions will require medical attention on the mainland. However, Mr. Pugh stated that both the medical transfer and subsequent treatment would incur significant expenses. He expressed hope that medical insurance would cover a portion of the treatment, but estimated that transporting Mr. Davis to Bangkok for specialized care and then repatriating him to the UK could exceed £30,000. Mr. Pugh mentioned that prior to the accident, his friend had intended to return home for the Christmas period, and suggested that if additional funds were secured, this plan might still be achievable. Nevertheless, Mr. Pugh indicated that a subsequent amputation might become necessary due to infections in Mr. Davis’s leg and pelvis. He also described the torn bladder as a “real concern.” Mr. Davis’s parents have traveled to Thailand to provide assistance. Mr. Pugh explained that his friend has been unable to coordinate his own medical care or manage insurance matters due to fluctuating consciousness. The two individuals have maintained their friendship since their initial meeting at school two decades ago. Mr. Pugh characterized his friend as “incredibly laid back” and “a genuinely nice guy.” He expressed his belief that the volume of donations received thus far serves as “a measure of what he’s like as a person,” and also observed contributions from international locations where Mr. Davis had previously taught. Mr. Davis commenced teaching English as a foreign language internationally in 2016, with his travels including Thailand, Peru, Mexico, and Ecuador. In his most recent endeavors, he had been engaged in establishing teaching opportunities for other British citizens to travel and instruct English as a foreign language. Mr. Pugh stated that his friend’s injuries are anticipated to be “life-changing,” and he further mentioned that he and other friends were determined to provide all possible assistance to Mr. Davis and his family. He conveyed that he had not anticipated such a significant response, but was astonished by the quantity of individuals who had made contact, among them numerous school friends with whom he had lost touch for years.
