An off-duty police officer sustained a stab wound and was hospitalized after attempting to prevent a knifepoint robbery in Luton. Bedfordshire Police responded to a call regarding the incident, which occurred just outside Luton Point on George Street around 13:10 GMT on Saturday. Two individuals, described as men in their 20s, reportedly stole a moped. They brandished a large knife or machete at the moped’s rider before stabbing the officer who intervened. The Metropolitan Police officer’s Bedfordshire colleagues have characterized his actions as “heroic.” His injuries are not considered life-threatening. Detective Inspector Jon Stow of Luton CID labeled the event a “brazen attack” and stated that police would maintain a noticeable presence in the town centre in the aftermath of the incident. Temporary Chief Constable Dan Vajzovic commented, “Wanton violence of this level is utterly appalling and has no place on the streets of our county.” He added, “Thankfully, the officer is expected to make a full recovery, though this story could have been very different.” Vajzovic continued, “I speak on behalf of the force and wider public in thanking him for his bravery and selflessness in the line of duty. His actions were nothing short of heroic.” Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner John Tizard remarked, “This is one of many examples of police officers putting themselves at risk in the public interest and to protect members of the public. Selfless interventions like this and effective policing are critical to making Bedfordshire’s streets safer.” Tizard further stated, “Even when off duty, this Met officer was ready to step into danger to protect others. On behalf of the people of Bedfordshire I thank him for his courageous action, and wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.” Authorities are requesting that anyone possessing information regarding the incident contact them. Descriptions of the suspects indicate one was dressed in a black jacket and trousers, while the other wore a dark jacket paired with grey tracksuit bottoms featuring a white stripe along the side. It was noted that PC Jon Henry was fatally stabbed on the same street in 2007. For updates on Beds, Herts and Bucks news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. Copyright 2024 BBC.
