A prominent cinema operator has unveiled plans to take over a site in Middlesbrough, following the recent announcement of another chain’s impending departure. Odeon is set to occupy the premises in Middlesbrough’s town centre as Cineworld prepares to vacate. The cinema located on Marton Road is among multiple Cineworld venues impacted by a nationwide restructuring initiative and is slated for closure in January. Legal and General (L&G), the landlords, stated that Odeon would soon occupy the building, which would undergo substantial upgrades. In an official statement, L&G confirmed that a refurbishment project is scheduled to commence in February, following the conclusion of Cineworld’s occupancy. This announcement signifies Odeon’s return to Middlesbrough, having previously closed its Corporation Road branch in 2001. MP Andy McDonald expressed approval of the takeover, stating it would contribute to offering “great options” for cinema enthusiasts in the town centre. Furthermore, he endorsed distinct proposals for a “boutique” three-screen cinema at Captain Cook Square, projected to open in summer 2025.
