A cinema operator has verified the shutdown of one location while simultaneously revealing intentions to launch a different venue in another municipality. Odeon specifically stated that its Kettering outlet is scheduled to cease operations on 28 January 2025, concurrently disclosing the upcoming launch of a new Odeon Luxe in Northampton during the following year. In recent times, over 2,000 individuals endorsed a petition expressing solidarity with the Kettering establishment and seeking to prevent its shutdown. Odeon, in an official statement, indicated that the choice to close the location was made after “constructive, but ultimately unsuccessful negotiations”. Augur Group, the proprietor of the building, attributed this decision to a “significant drop” in attendance observed over the last five years, adding that the venue was “no longer viable”. The forthcoming Odeon in Northampton is set to emulate a precedent established in Peterborough, where a Luxe cinema featuring more than 600 seats and eight screens took the place of a previously closed site, generating 60 employment opportunities. Earlier in the current month, Cineworld declared that its Sixfields Leisure location in Northampton would discontinue operations on 19 January, as part of a broader restructuring initiative. The BBC inquired with Odeon whether its new Luxe establishment would be situated in the former Cineworld premises. The opening date for the new venue was not disclosed.
