A nurse has been removed from the professional register after being found to have administered only one unit of blood to a patient, despite two units being prescribed. David Nivet Egea held the position of clinical lead at Berkshire Healthcare NHS Trust during the period when this incident occurred, specifically between April 2016 and September 2019. The matter came to light following a complaint filed by a colleague against Mr Egea, alleging bullying and claiming she was coerced into countersigning the patient’s inaccurate medical records. A panel from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) determined that Mr Egea had endangered the patient. Mr Egea, who resigned from the trust in November 2019, maintained that the incident never took place. The panel stated its preference for the testimony provided by Mr Egea’s former colleague. It reasoned that the woman had no motive to fabricate her account, considering that possessing knowledge of one blood unit being given when two were required “would have serious professional consequences for her.” She testified that Mr Egea had been “very manipulative and because he was my senior, I was always scared to say anything because there was no proof.” The nurse further informed the panel that while Mr Egea “tried to be friendly, he had to be pleased all the time.” She added, “If we questioned him, he would get angry… which made me quiet and want to please him.” The NMC concluded that Mr Egea’s conduct was dishonest and noted that it observed “no evidence of remorse or acceptance” from him subsequent to its findings.
