A nuclear weapons facility has received a directive to enhance its operational procedures following damage to an explosives component. The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) issued an improvement notice to the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) located in Aldermaston, Berkshire. This action stems from an incident in August, when the component sustained damage during its assembly by workers for testing. The damage occurred because personnel did not adhere to established procedures while manually handling the item. The AWE holds the sole responsibility for manufacturing nuclear warheads within Britain. The ONR clarified that the specific operations conducted at the Explosive Technology Centre posed no radiological risk. Furthermore, it stated that the incident presented no danger to either the public or the environment. An investigation by the ONR, supported by the Health and Safety Executive, concluded that AWE had not adequately planned, organized, or controlled the procedure, thereby exposing employees to increased health and safety hazards. Tim Allmark, who serves as ONR’s head of regulation for the weapons sub-directorate, stated: “The notice requires AWE to ensure that arrangements for explosive safety are appropriate to the activities being undertaken.” He added: “AWE took appropriate and timely action in response to the incident, and we will continue to engage with them during the period of the improvement notice to ensure positive progress is made to address this shortfall.” AWE is required to comply with the stipulations of the notice by August 20, 2025.
