Notts County midfielder George Abbott has indicated that comparisons to notable loan players who previously played for the Magpies are contributing to his career aspirations. His sole senior appearance for his parent club, Tottenham, occurred in the Premier League in May 2023. The 19-year-old has played 12 matches for the successful League Two team since joining on a season-long loan from Tottenham during the summer. Despite being among the youngest members of the first team, his impact at the Magpies has led to swift comparisons with Manchester City’s England international Jack Grealish and Nottingham Forest captain Ryan Yates. Grealish played for Notts during the 2013-14 season when the club was in League One, while Yates spent a portion of the 2017-18 campaign at Meadow Lane following the team’s relegation. “It’s always an amazing thing for the fans to sort of compare me to the brilliant players that have moved on from Notts County to where they are now,” Abbott stated in an interview with BBC East Midlands Today. “I hope I can carry on from where they left off, be my own player and get to the level they are now.” Grealish was an Aston Villa player when he was loaned to Notts, and six years following his period at Meadow Lane, he was transferred to Manchester City for £100m, a club where he has secured seven significant trophies, including the Champions League. Regarding Yates, his tenure in League Two with Notts is a component of an impressive career during which he has competed in all five of England’s top football leagues. Abbott, who had already been captaining Tottenham’s Under-21 team prior to his transfer to Notts, considers the loan to the East Midlands to be “the best way forward” for his developing career. At Notts, he is a member of a team currently positioned third in the league standings and considered a strong contender for promotion. “It’s a building stone to where I want to get to,” he commented. “Although you are going down the leagues, you are also getting used to men’s football and the physicality of it.” Stuart Maynard, Notts head coach, stated that Abbott, whose prior senior football experience consisted of a single first-team appearance for Spurs in the Premier League, possesses “the tools” necessary to forge a career in the top flight. “George is so athletic, but he has football intelligence as well – he has a bit of everything,” Maynard remarked. “He has a very bright future ahead of him if he keeps going the same way he is performing now.”
