Residents of a Nottinghamshire town have received assurances that their sole shopping centre will continue operations, even though it is slated for auction. The Idlewells centre, located in Sutton-in-Ashfield, is scheduled to be auctioned by Acuitus on December 12, with an anticipated sale price ranging from £3.25 million to £3.5 million. The announcement has led to numerous social media comments from local residents expressing uncertainty regarding the centre’s future. However, Davlea Estates, the site managers, have confirmed that it will continue to function as a shopping centre. Idlewells commenced operations in November 1971, initially as an open-air market. The facility encompasses 150,000 square feet and includes 40 retail outlets, a cafe, three kiosks, and a multi-storey car park. Additionally, it houses the town’s indoor market. Jason Zadrozny, leader of Ashfield District Council, characterized the centre as a “bustling community hub”. He stated, “If I tried to go to the indoor market for a coffee, I’d be struggling to get a seat because it’s that well loved and we just want to make sure it stays like that.” Zadrozny further indicated that the council intends to collaborate with the prospective new owners to ensure the centre’s continued prosperity. According to Acuitus’ listing, the centre presently generates over £540,000 in net operating income. Davlea Estates explained that the choice to sell stems from its strategy to “realign its portfolio of properties” and is unrelated to the performance of Idlewells, which draws three million visitors annually. It added, “Any prospective buyer will inherit a shopping centre with a strong retail offering, several cafes, a thriving market, regular events, and strong interest in every available unit.”
