The Nottingham Panthers have permanently retired the jersey of ice hockey player Adam Johnson, whose death occurred following an injury sustained during a game. The 29-year-old sustained a fatal neck injury from a skate blade during a collision involving Sheffield Steelers’ Matt Petgrave on 28 October 2023. His jersey number, 47, was officially retired by the club after a ceremony that took place before the Panthers’ match against the Fife Flyers on Saturday. Lynn DeGrio, Johnson’s aunt, addressed attendees at the event, representing the family, and characterized him as “humble, modest and down-to-earth.” Addressing the Panthers crowd, she stated, “We’d like to thank you all for your support throughout this past year.” She continued, “You have enveloped us with love, messages, and prayers while we were in our darkest hours.” Adding, “We will forever be grateful for all your support.” Omar Pacha, the chief executive of the Panthers, also delivered remarks at the ceremony, stating: “Adam was a top player, but he was an even better human being.” He expressed gratitude to Johnson’s family members for making the journey across the Atlantic to attend the event in Nottingham, which included a standing ovation as Johnson’s jersey number was raised to the arena’s rafters. Mr Pacha further described Johnson as “a quiet, positive leader, a committed player that guys loved, and a huge, calming presence in the locker room.” He concluded by saying, “After Adam left us, we all had our struggles, but to this day I cannot even imagine the feelings that all of Adam’s friends and family here today felt and still feel.” In November, authorities extended the bail until January for a man who had been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with Johnson’s death.
