An officer with Northumbria Police has faced court proceedings, accused of causing a pensioner’s death through dangerous driving. PC Mark Roberts, aged 56, residing at Newburn Court, Darlington, was operating a police vehicle when it was involved in a collision with a motorbike on Dunston Road in Gateshead in July 2022. Muriel Pinkney, 74, who was a passenger on the motorcycle, subsequently passed away in hospital. The individual riding the bike sustained serious injuries. PC Roberts made an appearance at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court, where he was released on bail pending his subsequent court hearing scheduled for the new year. Mrs. Pinkney’s death occurred nine days following the collision. PC Roberts received charges for causing her death by dangerous driving and for inflicting serious injury upon Ronald Pinkney. Additionally, he is facing accusations of causing death by careless driving and causing serious injury by careless driving. District Judge Steven Hood approved the bail, and PC Roberts is set to appear next at Durham Crown Court on January 17.
