A local authority has confirmed that a railway service is set to reopen “before Christmas,” though only two stations will be completed at that time. The Northumberland Line’s initial operations will connect Ashington and Newcastle, making stops exclusively at Seaton Delaval and the pre-existing Manors station. An additional four stations are scheduled to become operational in 2025. Newsham station has become the most recent to face delays, attributed by Northumberland County Council to a “number of power, engineering and regulatory challenges.” Dennis Fancett, representing the South East Northumberland Rail User Group (Senrug), stated: “It is more disappointing that we still don’t know exactly when services will begin running.” The county council indicated that the commencement date, along with details regarding ticket purchases, will be announced in the “coming days.” Passenger services are set to resume on the 18-mile line connecting Newcastle and Ashington, marking their return six decades after their discontinuation. While initial expectations were for the line to launch with six new stations, Bedlington, Bebside, Northumberland Park, and Newsham are now slated for opening in 2025. Neil Blagburn, the line programme delivery director, mentioned that teams have been “working around the clock” to finalize Newsham. He added: “It has been our biggest and most complex sites and will be open in a matter of weeks. Given the issues that we have experienced on this station, that in itself will be a significant achievement.” Mr. Fancett commented: “I don’t challenge the decision to open with only two stations finished, but I do question a lack of information more generally.” He continued: “We still don’t know what date we will see trains running, nor can people buy tickets or make their Christmas travel plans.” “This uncertainty threatens to make the whole opening a bit of a damp squib,” he concluded.
