It has been confirmed that passenger train services will commence on the Northumberland Line on December 15, marking the first time in 60 years that trains will run on this railway. The line will connect Ashington and Newcastle, with scheduled stops at Seaton Delaval and Manors. An additional four stations, not yet completed, are slated to open in 2025. Glen Sanderson, leader of Northumberland County Council, stated: “This is a truly groundbreaking project of national importance that has been talked about almost since the line was closed for passengers over 60 years ago.” The Northumberland Line project, valued at £298.5m, was a collaborative effort involving Northumberland County Council, the Department for Transport, Network Rail, and Northern Trains. The project encountered several delays, leading to repeated postponements of its launch date and escalating costs, including those associated with a new bridge at Newsham. Initially, when the scheme was proposed in 2020, its estimated cost was approximately £160m. Currently, only two stations, Ashington and Seaton Delaval, have been completed. The stations at Bedlington, Bebside, Northumberland Park, and Newsham are anticipated to open in 2025. The service will also include a stop at Manors. Mr. Sanderson described the undertaking as a “hugely difficult project” that presented “very significant engineering challenges.” He further commented: “Despite the enormity of the job we have been determined to reopen the line and that is what we have done.” Northern, the operating company, has conducted hundreds of test journeys along the route. Jason Wade, regional director, expressed confidence “of providing a safe, reliable and affordable service.” Dennis Fancett, Chair of the South East Northumberland Rail User Group (SENRUG), stated he was “absolutely delighted.” He remarked: “People living in these communities will now be able to plan their Christmas and New Year trips by train, not just to Newcastle but also to locations further afield such as York or London.” The Northumberland Line is scheduled to offer a half-hourly service, with a travel time of 35 minutes between Ashington and Newcastle. Ticket sales are anticipated to commence one week prior to the start of train operations.
