A quarry project has received approval from Northumberland County Council, notwithstanding local opposition. The council sanctioned a proposal to extract dolerite from a 70.9-acre location situated near Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, with nearly three million tonnes of material slated for extraction over a two-decade period. The local authority recorded 175 objection letters, and Kirkwhelpington native actor Greg Wise also lent his support to the initiative aimed at preventing the approval. Nevertheless, council planning officials advised the approval of the plans, determining that the environmental impact of the quarry was deemed “minimal” and superseded by the economic advantages related to employment and the local economy. Dolerite serves as a component in concrete manufacturing, and proponents of the quarry stated that it is expected to generate 20 permanent positions. During the strategic planning committee meeting of the Conservative-led council held on Tuesday, Philip Lawless, an opponent of the project, articulated residents’ worries regarding noise, dust, and the “waste material used for backfill”. He asserted, “This will be the destruction of our environment, which will never be repaired by an uneconomic development.” Officials indicated that the location was “relatively isolated” from adjacent residences, with the closest dwelling situated 617ft (188m) distant, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service. It was disclosed at the meeting that the initial proposals had involved the extraction of four million tonnes of material over a 25-year timeframe, representing a “significant reduction” from those earlier plans. Concerns were brought forward regarding the effect of increased Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) on the road system; however, Labour councillor Alex Wallace stated he was “not convinced with the severity of the number”. The proposals received approval with a vote of eight in favor, two against, and one abstention.
