Northern Ireland secured a victory against Croatia in their initial Euro 2025 play-off match, thanks to a remarkable goal by Lauren Wade. While the team’s Euro 2025 qualification status remains undecided, the draw for the upcoming Nations League has already taken place. Manager Tanya Oxtoby’s primary attention will be on the forthcoming play-off against Norway, but Northern Ireland is now aware of its opponents for the next year’s Nations League. Northern Ireland has been placed in League B1 alongside Poland, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Romania, a grouping that presents both familiar adversaries and significant challenges. BBC Sport NI examines Northern Ireland’s future opponents in League B1. Poland, with a world ranking of 32, is managed by Nina Patalon and captained by Ewa Pajor. They are considered the highest-ranked team in the group and are expected to be the favourites. After securing victory in their group during the inaugural Nations League last year, Poland encountered difficulties in Euro 2025 qualifying, finishing last in a group that included Germany, Iceland, and Austria, without earning any points. This performance is not considered indicative of their full capabilities, as they subsequently defeated Romania 6-2 on aggregate in the first round of Euro 2025 play-offs. Poland now aims to avenge their previous encounters with Austria and qualify for their first major tournament. Their prominent player is Barcelona striker and captain Ewa Pajor, who has accumulated 62 goals in 92 international appearances. Northern Ireland previously met Poland during the 2015 World Cup qualifiers, with Poland emerging victorious in both matches. They secured a 3-0 win at Mourneview Park in November 2013, with goals from Magdalena Szaj and two from Patrycja Pozerska. This was followed by a 4-0 victory the subsequent September in Torun, where then-teenager Pajor scored twice. In Manager Oxtoby’s most recent squad, only captain Simone Magill, defender Laura Rafferty, and winger Lauren Wade participated in those matches against Poland 11 years ago. Romania, ranked 43rd globally, is led by Manager Massimo Pedrazzini and captained by Ioana Bortan. Having achieved promotion from League C, they were the lowest-seeded team in the draw but aim to deliver unexpected results. Romania had been relegated to the third tier following the initial Nations League campaign but subsequently recovered by winning all six of their matches against Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Bulgaria. Northern Ireland’s most recent encounter with Romania was in February 2022, during a training camp in Spain, as Northern Ireland intensified preparations for their inaugural Euros final that summer. On that occasion, Romania secured a 1-0 victory in Marbella, with Carmen Marcu scoring the decisive goal. Their leading goal scorer is 39-year-old striker Florentina Olar, who has netted 23 goals in 180 international appearances. The majority of the Romanian squad plays in their domestic league. As previously noted, their aspirations for Euro 2025 were concluded by Poland in October, following a 2-1 loss in the first leg in Bucharest and a 4-1 defeat in the return fixture. Bosnia-Herzegovina, ranked 63rd globally, is managed by Selver Hodzic and captained by Milena Nikolic. Manager Oxtoby likely felt a sense of reassurance upon drawing Bosnia-Herzegovina, given they are recent adversaries whom her team has demonstrated they can defeat. Northern Ireland overcame Bosnia twice during Euro 2025 qualifying, securing a 3-1 win in Zenica in April and a 2-0 victory at Windsor Park in July. Despite these two losses to Northern Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina managed to challenge Oxtoby’s team in both encounters and achieved a notable draw against Portugal. Finishing third behind Northern Ireland and Portugal, Bosnia advanced to the first round of Euro 2025 play-offs but ultimately suffered a 6-3 aggregate defeat to Serbia. Captain Milena Nikolic is their leading goal scorer with 23 goals, and 19-year-old Inter Milan player Marija Milinkovic made a strong impression during qualifying. Regardless of the outcomes in other fixtures, Oxtoby’s objective will be to secure six points from the matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
