A former sub-postmaster from Belfast, implicated in the Horizon IT scandal, is set to be awarded an interim compensation payment of £200,000. This individual obtained the order on Wednesday, concluding a 15-year struggle to vindicate himself. His legal team characterized the resolution as “life-changing”. Over 900 sub-postmasters faced prosecution for theft due to erroneous data generated by the Horizon computer system. Fraud allegations were leveled against the unnamed man concerning a business he operated in the early 2000s. Acting on legal counsel, he initially admitted guilt to seven charges of false accounting. He was given a suspended prison sentence and mandated to reimburse the Post Office £1,500. Nevertheless, once defects in the computer system were identified, his convictions were overturned in September. The man’s legal representatives submitted a claim for compensation through the Horizon Convictions Redress Scheme. Victoria Trainor, a solicitor from KRW Law, stated that no financial sum could erase the stigma her client had suffered. She quoted: “These toxic convictions have affected every strata of his life, preventing him progressing with any career and excluding him from getting certain jobs which sadly affected his mental health.” Ms. Trainor expressed that it was “depressing that a totally innocent man devoted to his work and family was fitted up for a crime he didn’t commit”. She further remarked: “The Post Office hierarchy responsible for this injustice debacle should forever hang their heads in shame.” This scandal has been characterized as among the most significant miscarriages of justice in British history. The Post Office itself initiated numerous legal proceedings, prosecuting 700 individuals from 1999 to 2015. An additional 283 cases were pursued by other entities, such as the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). A considerable number of sub-postmasters were incarcerated for false accounting and theft, and many experienced financial ruin.
