A police department has announced its intention to publicly identify individuals sought for questioning concerning domestic abuse, as part of an initiative during the Christmas period. Northamptonshire Police reported an uptick in domestic abuse incidents during the holiday season. Within this awareness campaign, law enforcement personnel have reviewed a roster of individuals they wish to interview regarding severe domestic abuse cases and intend to release the names of those who fail to cooperate. Detective Inspector Pete Ticehurst, affiliated with the force’s Domestic Abuse Investigation Unit, stated that officers aim for families to experience a “safe and peaceful” Christmas. Det Insp Ticehurst further noted, “The tactic of publicising the most wanted offenders has worked very successfully in the past, with many handing themselves in.” He continued, “Previously, some offenders expressed discomfort about having their photos circulated via social media or in the local press, so I strongly urge those who don’t want their name and photo circulated to voluntarily hand themselves in for questioning now, so their details can be removed from the list.” Law enforcement will additionally conduct welfare checks on victims protected by existing measures to ensure their safety. Furthermore, compliance checks will be performed on offenders to verify adherence to any bail or court stipulations. Det Insp Ticehurst declared: “No-one should have the fear of abuse or violence hanging over them, which is why we are warning domestic abusers to think about and change their behaviour, or we will come after them.” He added, “There is no justification for anyone to be violent, abusive, or controlling to their loved ones. We aim to do everything in our power to protect victims.” For updates on Northamptonshire news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
